Usually AV programs will let you make up an exclusion filetype list.
I'd include .tbb files in there. There's no need to have NAV scan them.
There are those antivirus programs that will, by default, scan all
filetypes, realtime. This is unnecessary and can be troublesome as
you've experienced.
Others, like NOD32, by default, check only filetypes which can be
potentially run by an interpreter/application and therefore have their
payload infect your system. It does have the option to scan all
filetypes, but the user has to enable this after installing.

This may be an incorrect assumption since, the e-mail propagated viruses
tend to come in waves, in that you usually receive many copies for days
to weeks. So, this may be your first time with this particular virus but
there may be more copies of it that will come your way over the next few
days.
