Ahem - I don't think that actually works. Spaces at EOL are only
preserved in templates from my experimentation. So we actually do get
<dash><dash> no space. What's more, If we have the temerity to let the
cursor wander through our real <dash><dash><space> line then the space
is virtualised into oblivion. Darn. Now I've gone and wrecked the
argument I was having in favour of virtual space. Back to the drawing
board. <g>
