Actually, I try to subvert my cable modem service provider's routine
and assign myself rogue IP addresses that I expect to receive
meaningful traffic, and then when I carry my laptop to work I also
expect that same IP address to work.

Sheesh, that's got to be the most short-sighted thing I've read on the
list in a long time.  DHCP is a lot easier than setting up NAT boxes
at every location I want to plug my laptop in...
