I was eagerly waiting for Eudora's new 5.0 (there were a
couple of bugs that I hoped would be fixed, and perhaps the
upgrade would finally use less memory), so I checked the
Eudora newsgroup regularly, waiting for reviews. When they
arrived, it turned out that Eudora has taken a new course
that I vehemently disagree with (MoodWatch, for one) and
that nothing had been done about the memory problem.
In that newsgroup, many people discussed alternatives. The
Bat was often mentioned, Calupso, and Poco. I decided to try
them.
The Bat was the first one that I had a go at. Meanwhile I
have tried Calypso (and discarded it: the looks & feel don't
agree with me, and I need more functionality). I never got
around to testing Poco.
I am still not sure whether I'll migrate to The Bat. Apart
from my complaints about the editor (habit does decrease the
intensity of the complaint, I might add), I have one other,
rather important worry: continuity.
TB is produced by a small company and written and maintained
by a team of only two programmers (and four people doing
other stuff). While I enjoy supporting small companies (yes,
I do pay for nifty and ingenious programs: cracks I only use
for expensive programs produced by fat companies that I only
use once per month) I _do_ wondering whether the company
producing TB will survive. _Will_ we have a V2.0? Will bugs
be resolved?
I don't want to find myself in the position of having to
migrate from the one e-mail client to the other _again_...
While I don't expect definite answers from the TBUDL list on
this, I am quite sure that some of you have pondered this
same issue.. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this subject.
