I did try this too. No error, and the file compresses down to a small
file size with only the viewable messages. It really seems that
somehow all the messages were marked for deletion. Is there a keyboard
shortcut to do this? Perhaps I hit the wrong keys at the wrong time
and didn't know it.

I can't do this, as the messages are "not there".
