I seem to have missed the beginning of this discussion, although I do
have this entire thread.  I probably missed it, because I'm now
routinely deleting most of the list messages without reading them, which
I think supports the idea of splitting the list. :)  I think I'm picking
up the messages most days and, for awhile now, I've been getting well
over a 100 messages a day. Miss a day and ... hopeless.

I think splitting the list is an excellent idea! I recently convinced
someone to try The Bat! I told him to make sure to subscribe to the
TBUDL, but as I did, I realized that I've developed reservations about
the usefulness of the list for people new to program or who have simpler
e-mail needs or less interest in e-mail technology and the like. Then,
there is the sheer volume of messages, which alone can be intimidating
or overwhelming.

So, I hope it happens, as I will then once again be able to recommend
the list to new users without reservation and think I'll find the list
more useful and manageable myself.
