If you want to immediately expand all threads, press <Ctrl><*>. This
way you can use down arrow to access all messages. However, I
recommend you to use this: <Ctrl><Right Arrow>, which jumps to next
unread message, and automatically expands threads. For scrolling I use
(depending on my mood) either mouse wheel, or <Alt><Down>.

I personally like it the way it is, as I can see, which threads
contain unread messages. If the message itself is unread, then it will
have closed envelope (usually yellow color, but can be red [high
priority] or blue [low priority msg]) when unread, and open envelope
when read.
