Even if the subthread is open? Try using Ctrl-* (I think) to expand
all threads, and then I think space will go deeper.

I use Ctrl-Right arrow. The only downside is that focus has to be in
either the folder or the message list, and not inside the message body
(where Ctrl-right arrow will just move over words). Ctrl-Right arrow
moves to the next unread message, doing the right thing for me in
threaded and unthreaded views. I think Ctrl-] will work too, and even
in the message body list, but I find it harder to hit. Ctrl
Right-arrow will even advance across folders.
