If you're using a US keyboard, with the US character map, you can use
the second ALT key on the right hand side of the space.  But your
point still stands... you have to stretch the fingers a bit to hit
different keys.  Fortunately I have wide hands, and my little finger
does odd things, I can reach the F12 key from the ALT key on the left
hand side of the space bar ;)
