There are some things you need to consider here:
a) You're writing to others and not yourself when you reply to a post.
The formatting should therefore be in a way that the recipients prefer
and not you.
b) In a democratic environment as this list, majority rules. If most
of the membership prefers a certain type of formatting, then that's
the one that should be used. You're the first person I've read that
actually defends top replying the way you did. It's certainly a
genuine one and I can understand the basis behind your preference,
though I'm surprised that the disadvantages of such a method doesn't
outweigh the advantages you stated.
c) The list promotes and prefers that members format their mail in a
particular way (contextual, nested replies, rather than top or bottom
replying) with the knowledge that it will not please everyone (I don't
know if everyone will ever be pleased about anything except having
their own way which just cannot happen on a moderated, and hence, more
orderly list). This is so because the preferred format offers the
following advantages:
i) It avoids over-quoting since the original message is broken
up into parts and the various segments/paragraphs directly
answered beneath.
ii) Misunderstandings about what the replier is answering to is
minimised if what he's specifically answering to is quoted
above.
iii) It helps to minimise missing out pertinent material that
needs to be addressed in the original message. I always left
things out when I was forced to use top quoting while I was
away for a couple months in Japan. My wife always accused me of
not answering questions she asked. :) I guess I'm accustomed to
contextual nested replies.
iv) It does make for easier reading and understanding of the
replies for most in that it avoids having to scroll back down
to the original message to reread what you are replying to.
You're an exception which I accept. However, please consider
what your recipients want to see in your replies. If I have to
send private mail to you, I hope that I'll remember to top
quote for you. :)
E> Please explain about the signature problems you mention. I am not
E> certain I understand.
You don't use a signature delimiter so your messages don't pose this
problem. However, if you reply to messages that contain the signature
delimiter, dash, dash<space>, then all the text below the delimiter
will be stripped from the reply. If you top reply, insert your
signature with the delimiter and then quote the original message below
this, all the original message will not be quoted in the reply. This
can make contextual replying difficult for those who wish to do so.
