Hello Roelof,

RO> Consider redirected mailboxes etc. Depending of the way the

Well, normally, the receipt should be received only once and it should
not tell whether the message was further redirected and to which
address.

RO> Apart from that, confirmation of receipt by an mta is also
RO> confirmation that the used e-mail address is valid. So down the drain

RO> address.

There are other FAR MORE sufficient ways of e-mail validation. Waiting
for confirmation receipt means receiving one message back. Imagine one
million of addresses validated this way - it's one million of receipts
to receive and to process. It's a bit more complicated than just spamming
away :-)

RO> Everything that validates my address without that validation being
RO> initiated by me is a privacy issue.

Usually, e-mail can be validated by simple sequence:

HELO/EHLO
MAIL FROM:<>
RCPT TO:<youraddress>
-->Your address is almost valid if a positive response is received here
RSET
QUIT

AFAIK, this is what address verifying programs are doing. Surely
enough, they are checking MX records to reach the final destination...
So, e-mail is really privacy-demolishing tool ;-))

I think the best way to get rid of SPAM is to get people to sign
messages using PGP or S/MIME and consider only signed content. Well,
it's a dream, you know...
