I've got an idea, which would (for some time at least) eliminate most of
spam messages - have the mail server request a confirmation (with a normal
e-mail message) for each e-mail, if the sender's address hasn't been
confirmed before. Since most spammers use bogus from addresses, they would
never be confirmed, and after some time the mail would be deleted. Of
course, the confirmations could be annoying, but each sender address would
only have to be confirmed once. This would of course require you to have
your own mail server, but for those of us who are on broadband it's usually
not a problem...
