That suits me fine, as most of my correspondents can't handle PGP/MIME.
Of course, your requirements may be different.

I'd like to be able to force the option to be off by default for every
message, though.

Your messages arrive in my mailbox in two parts: one which contains the
PGP/MIME signed part, and a text attachment that contains the footer of
your message.  Not a very elegant way to display the message.
Apparently the Bat signs the text but not the footer or signature (or
perhaps that's the way you have your templates set up?).
