Since you're having trouble downloading, you could try to change your
settings to leave mail on server for 60 days (that's long enough to
leave your 30 days old mail in place), that way TB won't try to
download received messages again, you can do that at:
  account -> properties -> mail management -> leave messages on server
As soon as you've downloaded everything, you could change your
settings back to 'delete received messages from server'

  Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Send mail -> connection: regular
