This would work only if the client machines are always on the same
network as the server.

In Avi's case, it's not.

He wants to access his mail when completely away from his other machine,
his primary machine.

IMAP is what you need for such a task, unless you wish to jump hoops or
enjoy the tedium of repetitive tasks.
