Another problem might be cause by your anti-virus scanner: When you access a big file (like messages.tbb) it gets scanned on-access and that takes time. So, you can exclude the mail folder from the on-access scan. Oh, and the limit for messages.tbb is 2 GB. TB! will send you a warning when you come close to that size.
