The Republicans, who we know DO understand business, are trying to get us to believe that we can get a free road by letting private investors build it. There is a lie in here somewhere.
The idea that investors would give the roads back to the public once the construction expense is recovered is ridiculous on its face. No one invests money just for the purpose of getting it back. Once they have their hands in the till, they will never go away. While a publicly owned toll lane might be a great idea, encouraging private business to build toll roads will create a new interest group that will oppose successful public transportation projects (inlcuding roads). The investors in the private roads will oppose every attempt at increasing the carrying capacity of ALL forms of public transit.
