Hello everyone,
Although not a technical writer by title, I do write instructions. Most of the instructions describe assistive devices for adults with developmental disabilities. My audience is the support staff who have to use the devices. My hope is that staff (college students working part time) use the device correctly and don't break it. Guess who has to pay for a new one? Not the staff person who broke it, but my client.
I have picked up many tips from you all here. I use Word and Access for the support plans. What I write is considered a legal document, according to the company that pays me. While I think that is mostly a scare tactic, it does motivate me to be careful.
I have a master's in industrial management from Georgia Tech. I taught productivity courses at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne for many years. When my husband decided to move to South Dakota, I trailed along behind him. Rural R Us, I've been known to say. Quite a change for a gal who was born in Washington, DC. I absolutely love the peace of looking out my upstairs window and seeing rolling hills and not a single human being.
In the past four years, I've learned a lot about respect and dignity, and the lack thereof. That's why I'm here, too.
