I’m just starting out in Technical Writing. I have a MA in English, and entertained going on for a PhD at the University of Arkansas, but my financial aid was late in getting to the University. So I had to go to work and lucked out with this position—and once I found out I’m making considerably more than a beginning English professor and realized I really don’t want to write academic papers about obscure Irish authors and that I would actually have to finish Finnegans Wake. . . Well, I decided to make this my career.
I have done a little Technical Writing in the past on a contract/freelance basis (spec/bid manuals, grant research, etc.), but that was for supplemental income.
Oh, by the way, Al, I can empathize with the long and meandering path toward the B.A. I graduated high school in 1990 and finally got the BA in 2000.
