Oh, what the heck, I like reindeer games... [looks at resume to verify experience and age]
I've been a tech writer for 12 years (good googly moogly). In the '60s I was playing little league baseball. In the '70s I was hating Disco. In the '80s I found Punk Rock and life was good again. I began my tech writing career working for software upstarts. This was valuable in that I was able to branch out and do some marketing and product catalogs. My first job with a Fortune 500 company was with Avery Dennison, again doing documentation and graphics for software releases. Since that time I've been Lou Gherig lucky and worked my butt off for major companies (Nissan, Disney, Paramount Pictures, Deloitte, Fox). At each of these companies I was able to assume roles and responsibilities outside of technical writing (functional analysis, business analysis, project management, etc.). As one recruiter told me, "Once you've worked in the entertainment industry, you're "in". The Entertainment IT environment is different, but always interesting. I've only worked outside the U.S. once (Lions Gate, British Columbia), and usually try to stay in the Los Angeles area. I do however have a wish-list - Holy Grails, if you will - of industries/companies that I'd like to work in/for: Boeing, banking, Apple... I too am happily married (nine years), and just moved into a great two-story home in the hills on the outskirts of Los Angeles. This is not so that I can make a grand entrance during the holidays. No, this is so that when a Frisbee lands on my lawn, I can fly down the stairs yelling, "Hey you kids, get the heck off my lawn!" No kids ourselves, but we do have three cats...and a rabbit. Apparently word has gotten out in the stray animal community that we take in any animal. Currently, I'm hoping that the Indianapolis Colts go undefeated, wondering if I should buy a new laptop so that I can play Flight Simulator X, and considering a contract position in Redmond, WA.
