I've been an STC member for 16 years, and I plan to continue. As Brenda said, I am not just a member, I'm also a participant. I attend meetings and give presentations. I am involved as a competitions judge. And a lot of the contracts I get come from fellow STC members.

STC is whatever you put into it. If you stay at home and just read emails and publications you probably won't feel you get your money's worth. But if you get out, go to meetings, attend presentations (even give one perhaps), enter a competition or be a judge in one (an invaluable opportunity to see a vast array of good work being done by your peers), you'll find you get way more than your money's worth.

I live over 125 miles from three chapters - Boston, Northern New England, and Vermont - yet I am a member of all three and have attended at least one meeting in each location within the last year. Again, you meet good people, make new friends, and get an appreciation for what is going one in the real world of technical communications.

It has paid off for me. I get opportunities that I would not have gotten or been qualified for had it not been for my participation in STC activities.

If you want my personal opinion about the one thing you could do to get your money's worth here it is: volunteer to be a judge in an STC competition near you. They're always needed, often offer training, and you will enjoy it a great deal as well as make a contribution.

My 2¢,

John Garison
