My membership in STC has been extremely valuable and useful, and I'm looking forward to becoming active again.  I'm sure my second attempt to contact my local chapters by e-mail will be successful, I'll find the meetings, and the search will be worth the effort!
 
I also recommend membership to anybody involved in any form of technical communication, for all of the reasons stated by others.  I still have some very old copies of the Journal, and I still refer to them -- the reference material provided there is also pretty terrific.
 
I'm also a member of ASQ.  Haven't tried it yet but the website looks delicious.
