A timely e-mail from Lisa. I'm smack dab in the middle of re-indexing a 265 page installation guide. I'd indexed it during the first major release, but it got very out of shape during the last major release, when we went from one platform to nine and I ran out of time!
So, with some time in hand, I'm happily editing the index, adding more markers, and adding more See and See also references. I'm also cleaning up content inconsistencies that stand out as I re-index. A good index contains much more than a TOC, such as alternate terms and concepts. The fun of doing an index is putting yourself into the mind of myriad users, wondering how they might search for information. Yes, I also love doing indexes. It typically takes me about a week to produce an 8-12 page index for a 200-page book. This also depends on the book. If the interface is inconsistent, it makes indexing a bit harder...
