I'll second Sean's comments, below. I previously worked for a company that wouldn't allow any images in the on-line documentation. In fact, I converted the custom help files from .jsp files with images to .xml files without images, replacing images with descriptions. The rationale here was that the content was to be translated by an external vendor into 10+ languages, at the same time as the interface was to be translated (thus images from the interface wouldn't be available).
There were cases where it wasn't as easy to use imageless documentation as it would have been to include them, but when we considered the cost of coming back after and trying to include images for 10+ languages without any language expertise, the decision was easy.
