Indeed. Good discussion though.

1) I am not involved in the design. My group leader goes to those
meetings, but our influence is not significant.

2) An informed user. I field some questions from our support staff on
some aspects of our products to help out a customer immediately.

3) Do I inform the fixes how? I test some few bugs that get fixed to
make sure they are.

4) Inform the overall project plan how? My GL is present at those
meetings with a discussion of what docs should be updated in what areas,
it's high level. What else need be said?

5) I review the design as I doc it. For the most part, we are locked out
of design. That door ain't opening here. I mean, am getting to design a
help system for a brand new software product -- we are a hardware
company and this is standalone software -- but the software is designed
already.

That answer your questions about my questions?

Cheers.

You get to document the product, but do you inform the development of
the product? You get trained in the product but are you a SME in the
product or just an informed user? You log bugs against the product but
do you inform the fixes? You do your doc plan but do you inform the
overall project plan at the onset? You organize doc reviews but do you
perform design reviews?

There's a big distinction between what our job is and what our
profession can offer. Job duties define your job and define the
immediate basis for which you get paid. Applying the knowledge and
abilities of our profession to all aspects and influences of our job
define your career and the foundation upon which you build success.
