Most of the products I have documented as a writer (or tested
in my previous life as an engineer) were things that could, if
not operated correctly, easily destroy themselves, their users
or, in one extreme case, 10 cities located anywhere within 
7800 km of its home base.  All of these things could, in
theory, be operated without their instruction manuals, but
even without regulatory requirements most people probably
wouldn't think it would make sense.
