That is, cannot a contractor be more distant, less affected, and so positive
change is less of an issue? 

 

Hi Sean,

It depends on the company. I've been lucky to work at a few where I did have
a positive affect on the quality of documentation, and I've worked at too
many where "you're just a writer." Unfortunately, I always get personally
involved in all of my projects. I think part of that is because it's hard
for a manager to stop managing.
