In 30+ years, I can think of only one instance of my giving notice
where the "counter offer" that would have gotten me to reconsider
my decision for even a moment wouldn't have required the firing
of someone at least one level above me.  In several cases the
company actually did fire the person, but not until months after
I was gone.
