It's also going to bite you at the peer level. Their trust in you will
have been shaken a bit. First you're leaving, now you're staying... Do
you still not like it there and are content with the bone you were
thrown to stay for a while longer? These things are often unsaid but
are very real.

I was around for such an event. One person in our Engineering group
gave his notice and informed all of Engineering (per policy) of his
notice. Several days later we got an e-mail from him saying "I changed
my mind, I'm staying". People joked with him, but there was definitely
a change in how people worked with him. No one relied on him quite
like they used to, and often checked up on his work if they were
dependent on it. And he did leave 3 months later anyway.

I agree with others. If you're at the point where you're going to
leave, don't turn back. You're already gone, and already lost, whether
you come back or not.
