I am also a new member of this list.
I have been writing most of my life, but became a "technical writer" by
accident in the mid-90s when I was recruited by US Bancorp to document
their operations. I really enjoyed the work and have been documenting
various software procedures ever since.
I also try to stay current with web site usability and user centered
documentation. In fact, I'm quite passionate about it. My own ability to
create dynamic web sites is limited, however. I used to code in html but
now it is more difficult to keep up.
Documentation requirements in my current position seem to resemble what we
used reserve for documentation specialists. In other words I'm not as
challenged, don't interview programers as often and my responsibilities
have become more and more limited. This is not a good sign, but seems to be
typical in the San Antonio area. (We'll see what I decide to do about
that.)
Oh, yes. I write primarily in FrameMaker and also convert files to online
help using ePublisher Professional from Web Works. Great fun.
