I like the introductions - it is always interesting to see the variety of
backgrounds and education that we all have, as well as the variety of business
and industries where we work.

Though I'm not really new to the list, I thought I'd share a little of what I'm
up to.? I've been in this business for 27 years or so, mostly as a contractor
of one type or another.? I have had a variety of titles (manager, editor,
writer, trainer, speaker, etc.) and a variety of clients (in medical, database,
hardware, finance, energy, television).? Good thing I like variety!? My latest
client has me working mostly in DITA, and I'm almost done with my next
commercial book (with a goal of having it in hand by the spring conference
season).? I also spend a lot of time volunteering for both STC and the IEEE
Professional Communication Society.

I particularly liked Donna's comment about her kids, because I'm seeing that
too.? My daughter is the editor-in-chief for her high school year book, and
comes home every day with challenges like: getting people to turn stuff in on
time, ensuring that graphics and text merge together correctly, repeatedly
reminding the staff writers to follow the established style guidelines,
editing/approving stacks of proofs, and managing the financial repercussions of
missed deadlines (they get charged a fine if they turn pages in to the
publisher late).? Any of that sound familiar?? My son is also in high school,
and he is starting to create web sites.? We're doing a very simple one now for
his wrestling team! I hope that these kinds of projects help my kids better
understand what I do, and also hope that they carry an appreciation of good
communication skills into whatever they choose to do in the future.
