Dear Anne, I’ve never had much luck in
generating student interest in these broad, theoretical-type interests. I do see them as an important part of
sociology though. How do you go about
teaching these so that students find them meaningful? Looking forward to the “keys”, Michael From: [email protected]
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf
Of Anne Eisenberg As several have
already pointed out, there are several categories of things being
presented. Some are data that change with time while others are
definitions. Perhaps we are
looking for more theoretical type insights, laws concerning human society? So - for example, a
general law might be that in all stratification systems those perceived as the
weakest (in numbers, physical size, power) are at the bottom of the system of
hierarchy. Another might be
that within groups particularly stable hierarchies emerge that reflect cultural
and social standards concerning status position. Another example
might be that formal rational organizations contain irrational elements that
detrimentally affect the ability to fulfill human needs. What does everyone
think? Anne Anne F. Eisenberg
