Kent,
Yes you look to the cable because it is the cheapest component,
lightest and easy to replace. You can stash a ton of patch cords but
switches and modules take space and gather dust.

On a recent issue where I was called into the diagnosis because I
walked into the room after the two admins had spent the better part of
the day trying to get the office back on line. I walked to the switch
rack, got on the stool and saw one patch cord in the MDX port that
didn't look right. I pushed it and heard a click. Immediately the
secretary in the next room yells "I'm on!" I got off the stool, smiled
and walked out. The two had been swapping cables, switches checking
continuity all morning. Now the patch cords used and the space they
crammed things into were not ideal but those two admins to this day
"Check the cables" before they do anything else.

Recycle bin. Not worth it. Similar to the "making your own patch
cords" discussion earlier.

Going back to that (because I was too busy to respond earlier)-- there
was a cute article I read years ago that was for sysadmins and network
managers (and for the life of me, I can NOT find it any more)-- the
article essentially had the phrase "Check the cable" every other
sentence. It was well written, highly amusing, and quite accurate
:-)
