There are some articles in Wired on the new Facebook data centers that are
doing 208V to 48V with batteries in 1 out of each 7 or 8 racks.

They seem to be designing their data centers from scratch, power, cooking,
cabinetry, CPU boards, etc, etc.

48V equipment as I remember historically came from the telco industry
(because they used 48V battery banks I guess).  They didn't do
UPSes, because they ran everything from batteries, and just used commercial
power to charge the batteries.  Things may be different now.
