We're now looking at Sun's Unified Storage Servers as a lower-tier of
storage service than we've ever had before. With Matching Grant pricing
(50% off retail), you can get the cost/usable Tebibyte (uTiB) down to
$1500 with one head and three fully populated shelves, and your cost per
additional uTiB is less than $1000.

If the data you're storing is compressible, then you might cut those
numbers in half (depending on how good the ZFS compression algorithm is).

And they can export iSCSI LUNs, and NetApp heads should be able to mount
iSCSI LUNs, so if you've got a huge investment in NetApp
SnapShot/SnapClone/SnapVault/SnapMirror (like we do), this is a
potential way to provide compatible storage a price that is way, way
lower than what NetApp charges. Of course, it most likely would not
perform nearly as well, but for some situations that would be okay.

I don't think we'll get away from NetApp any time soon, but more and
more of the lowest-tier of storage could quite conceivably go to Sun or
some other less well-known vendor.
