I'll try to answer your comment. On 4 Aug 2012, at 21:39, Øyvind Lode - Forums <[email protected]> wrote:
Ok, it sounds like JAWS is installed. not properly. After the reboot did the install process continue when you hit enter on the JAWS installer file?Yes, and no. I get the usual "Run", "Save" prompt, so I open the file and then hit Alrt+R to make it run. Then, the install continues. Jaws talks but the installer just sits there and does absolutely nothing. After the demo time Jaws just expires. The fact that the install process didn't complete and there is no way to manually start Jaws makes me think that it isn't properly installed. Honestly, given that Freedom is a major player in the accessibility market I've never seen such a messy and cumbersome install process, not even under Windows and that's saying something! After all, in the initial phase, how are you supposed to know that your system is being configured for Jaws, which is what comes up on screen, if you don't have another accessibility tool to use? The Jaws installer doesn't talk, even assuming things went well, until after the first reboot. So how, if you're mew to Jaws, are you supposed to know what is going on? If yes, JAWS is installed but you may have some licensing issues since it stops after 40 minutes. You're not wrong there. I do not believe the installer completed properly so I rolled the system back to pre-install time. It's really making me wonder why I bothered getting the lone of a dongle which I can't use. Jaws is currently a disaster area for me. I will try again, but I'm not hopeful of a successful installation. Gordon I have never used JAWS with a usb dongle. I use ILM. As I understand it this usb dongle should automatically be detected by JAWS and as long as it's connected JAWS should run in full version mode. That's obviously not happening here and that tells me you might have a invalid license or something else going on with that dongle. I also believe there used to be both ILM and usb dongle versions of the JAWS installer. But it looks like that is history because I can't find a usb dongle specific installer on the FS website. Only a usb thumb drive version witch is not the same as a usb dongle. But are we 100% sure that the standard JAWS installation file also works with a dongle? I suggest contacting FS or post to the JAWS-Users mailing list. It's a great list with a lot of clever individuals. http://jaws-users.com/mailman/listinfo/jaws-users-list_jaws-users.com -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Gordon Smith Sent: 4. august 2012 22:06 To: Techno-Chat ... I press OK to confirm the restart and it does. Then, as you say, the installer doesn't start so I had to execute it. Then, Jaws started talking about 10 minutes later but only as the install was supposed to be working. But sadly, it just sat there and bombed out after the 40 minute demo had gone. There was no installation at all so I had to abort it and roll back my system. I've given up! I'm currently running JAWS 13 64-bit on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. I installed it my self without any problems. But I recall there were some issues when the machine rebooted. That is after the machine had booted up and the JAWS-installer should start again automatically which it did not. I always place the JAWS installer on the desktop so I don't need help finding it when no screen reader is available. So I just hit windows + m to make sure I were on the desktop and hit J and then enter. JAWS continued the installation and all fine. But I wish I could use NVDA as my primary screen reader though. But the last time I tried NVDA the Braille support were flakey to say the least. NVDA's Outlook support is also primitive but it may have improved now. My biggest issue with JAWS is the broken windows console support. If I only had speech to rely on the console would have been unusable. But I use Braille and I'm fine but JAWS needs some serious work to make the windows console (command prompt) work as nicely as it used to. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Gordon Smith Sent: 4. august 2012 19:13 To: Techno-Chat ... They have to be joking. When you run it, the installer doesn't talk. You in fact don't get talking Jaws until well after the first restart. If you have no other assistive technology tool, you're lost! But as I've said, on our NoteBook this issue is produceable 100% of the time. So I wonder, what version did you install, Chris, 32 or 64-bit? it could have a baring. Our machine is running Windows 7 SP1 64-bit. All updates apart from the utterly pointless language packs installed. Come back Window-Eyes, all is forgiven!
