I just tested it with Word 2010, and this procedure still does work.

Then type space and type in the list item.
Press return and Microsoft Word should convert the asterix to a bullet and
then insert a further bullet on the new line ready for you to type the next
list item. on.
You then simply press return for each bullet you need.
To end the process of inserting bullets press return twice.
