As instructed in http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/ReadMe :

export TESSDATA_PREFIX="directory in which your tessdata resides/"

Note that the directory path must end in a /.

Since you have the data in different places for different versions,
you would need to export everytime you switch version.
