In Nutshell, one should install - to run tesseract of different versions by configure as follows: 1)for tesseract 2.03 = ./configure --prefix=/usr/bin/tesseract-2.03/ 2)for tesseract 2.04 = ./configure --prefix=/usr/bin/tesseract-2.04/ 3)for tesseract 3.0 = ./configure --prefix=/usr/bin/tesseract-3.0/ I shall test it in Ubuntu 9.04 and feed back to you.
