I've made my position pretty clear in past postings, and it hasn't
changed. But let me review what I regard as facts:

1. Our archive of scores serves many, many more non-techies than
techies.
2. It is difficult if not impossible to set up a Windows browser to
automatically open .ps.gz.
3. Many more people (like 98%) use Windows than Linux, decreasing the
significance of shortcomings in the Linux Acrobat Reader.
4. Many of us (including me) have gotten cries for help about how to
view/browse/process .ps and/or .ps.gz; I haven't gotten nor heard of any
such inquiries regarding pdf's.
5. People who regard gsview's screen rendering as superior to acroread's
may view pdf's in gsview.
6. Yesterday I had no end of difficulty finding gsview 4.0 and ARFL
ghostscript 7.0 files...the wisc website did not respond at all when I
tried to download from there, nor did the first dozen or so of the CTAN
mirror sites I tried. No such problem getting acrobat reader.

I can only think of two points in favor of archiving .ps.gz:
1. The files are smaller than PDF's
2. They don't have the problems with type-1 slurs that I recently
encountered.

Life is full of compromises. I'm 100% convinced that Christian made the
right choice in this case.
