My way of dealing with TeX and SuSe is this:

1) Install form SuSe tetex and (I'm fond of emacs) auctex
2) Deinstall tetex form SuSe and ignore all warnings about auctex being
incomplete
3) Install TeX and friends from the latest TeX-Live-CD (free for DANTE
members, 40DM for everybody else at Lehmann's Buchhandlung) on a
separate partition OVER ALL FURTHER SuSe-versions, just to be
updated upon a new TeX-Live-release.
4) Almost no problems regarding TeX and friends further on.

Happy (musix/...)TeXing!
