the "refresh now" button saved not my live, but the evening. Now I can
compile the pmx source as intended. I have also installed all files as
described in musicwininstall.
Now I can even compile the barsant.tex (from barsant.pmx).
For simple fingering I found \uptext{n}\ and simple digits useful. More
sophisticated will be zchar.

If you followed the instructions for setting up MiKTeX, or even if you
didn't, you ought to have a "local TeX directory," usually called
"localtexmf". You should put pmx.tex and musixps.tex somewhere in that
directory. I have mine in localtexmf\tex\generic\pmx and
localtexmf\tex\generic\musixtex respectively, but they can go ANYWHERE in
the localtexmf folder. Then--this is very important--in the MiKTeX options
program, which should be in your start menu, on the "general" tab, click
"refresh now." This tells MiKTeX where these files are.
Where to get musixps.tex? It's in both the most recent TeX distribution and
also by itself in the archive. What does it do? Enables Postscript type K
slurs. Do you need anything else to make postscript slurs work? Yes you do.

I'm afraid there's no special PMX command to put in fingerings. You have two
options:
1. Use the D (dynamics) command, with the arbitrary text option ("...") .
You'll probably have to shift each symbol both vertically and horizontally
to get it where you want, and you may also need to specify the font if you
don't like the default.
2. Use inline TeX such as possibly \zchar4{\kern-3pt 1}\.
