The first comics I ever read were in Superman From The '30s to the '70s and the Batman volume of the same name. They were a mix of color and black & white reprints, so oddly enough I am built for both. I prefer color but have been reading some Showcase Presents lately and find that I enjoy them as well. Whenever possible, price point wise, I will buy color.
As for the debate of "Wednedsy fix" vs. "trade waiting" I say this; only Sith think in absolutes. That might seem snarky but it is true. The people that think that monthly buyers are "blocking" the industry from going to original graphic novels are idiots because they don't understand that a monthly book is a viable economic model. You pay an artist once a month for a set number of pages. They do the work, they get paid, they move on to the next issue or series. I doubt that an artist would wait a whole six months to get paid while still doing the six months worth of work. Publishers will not front an artist six months worth of payment for pages they haven't received. I can see an artist or publisher doing this every once in a while (SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE springs to mind) but I doubt the industry could support it as an ongoing business model. So the argument that monthly comic readers are holding anything back is laughable. Personally I am read to divest myself of most of my books save the ones I really want and that usually revolves around a character I like. It would be nice to have the room and some extra cash even if I don't get out of it what I paid. I'm sick of this crap sitting around the house. Time to stick with what I like and move on.
