Trusted friends and advisors,I think it is time to replace my home use
Thinkpad. When I retired 5 years ago I replaced my company T-22 with a
refurb T-22. It is now running a little short in the horsepower
department with regards to Youtube video on email attachments and other
processor intensive activities.
I think it would be hard to go far wrong with either of the series you
mention, or the current T400 series. They will all meet the requirements
you stated. (At least I'm not aware of issues that would prevent T4x
running Win 7...?)
I would put a low limit at the T41p, as the improved graphics will help
with the Windows Vista/7 desktop. The T41 and later have a bit faster
memory than the T40 and earlier as well. T4x can use up to 2GB of RAM
which should be fine.
The T43 has an issue with 3rd party hard drives. I don't think any other
models have that issue.
As others mentioned, new hard drives are trending to SATA, but PATA/IDE
drives are available up to (at least) 320GB at the moment.
I have a T60 and it runs Windows 7 Release Candidate just fine, and my
wife's T41p tests well with Microsoft's Win7 test program.
