My x61s has this and igfxsrvc - they use 0 cpu according to winxp task manager. Recommendation?

There have been lots of reports of these processes consuming many cycles, though it seems to be version specific. On my X61t killing igfxpers cuts my temp by over 5 degrees; too bad it doesn't seem to be the problem with your machine (and Phil's).

What igfxpers does is poll your graphics chipset repeatedly to make sure it knows the current graphics state, and restores it if it is unexpectedly changed. This is hardly ever useful.

If your T61 is a model with Intel graphics, then try turning off the igfxpers process in the task manager and see if that cuts your temp/fan use. (I think your wife's machine has a Radeon for graphics, and doesn't run this useless CPU-hungry process.)

Subject: [Thinkpad] CPU temp/fan questions

Curiosity question: I installed TPFanControl on my T61 and my wife's T500. My CPU runs 56-58C and the fan runs all the time, sitting on a desk; hers runs mid- to high 40s and the fan often doesn't run, sitting on a softer surface. Should I be (a) surprised (b) worried (c) blasé?
