Well, I've broken first principles by changing two things at once: upgraded
TPFanControl and killed igfxpers. But the good news is, temp is now under
50C when idle -- if on BIOS control. On Smart control, it got to 60C before
I went back to BIOS control.

There have been lots of reports of these processes consuming many cycles,
though it seems to be version specific. On my X61t killing igfxpers cuts my

temp by over 5 degrees; too bad it doesn't seem to be the problem with your
machine (and Phil's).

What igfxpers does is poll your graphics chipset repeatedly to make sure it
knows the current graphics state, and restores it if it is unexpectedly
changed. This is hardly ever useful.
