[Thinkpad] rescuing an x31?

My wife's x31 won't boot Windows XP.  If I turn it on, it goes through 
the Windows logo screen, then goes to a blue screen, but with a working 
mouse, and just sits there.  If I boot in safe mode, it says safe mode 
around the edges, with a black screen and a working mouse, and just sits 
there.

How do I go about trying to fix this?
