Fortunately, I backed up the disk a few days ago. I just ran an XP
installation disk in recovery mode. chkdsk /p found errors, so I'm
trying chkdsk /r.
Next choice is whether to find a new ATA disk or buy a new machine.

to recover your drive from an earlier backup or reinstall Windows.
