I've since clarified (i.e. been informed) that there are actually 2 different errors. I thought it was all one error. Of course they may be (probably are?) related.
While I couldn't find anything searching fro the literal string of "The file or directory C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution is", when I google the literal string "Exception Processing Message C0000102" I get a bunch of hits, including this http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/841719.htm Only problem is that I think the backup was interrupted by this error coming again. I'm going to try a much more restricted backup and then run the chkdsk. If anyone here has more or better info, I'll be happy to try something else.
