Thanks George. It's not mine either - I'm updating it for a friend who bought it today. But encouraged by your (mostly) good track record, I said the prayer, pulled the battery, and ... emerged scratch-free!

Nevertheless, I think I'll pass on updating the embedded controller. System Update didn't find any critical updates, so I probably shouldn't have tried the optional EC update to begin with.

Another question. The reseller this T43 was purchased from wiped the recovery partition. In the event I ever need to do a fresh reinstall on this, will the recovery CDs I have from an X32 work for the T43? I've used them on a T42 and they worked fine except for a few drivers that needed to be updated from lenovo.com.

Most likely, a completely hard shutdown (killing all the power) is the

If the machine were mine, I'd say a quick prayer and do it. But it's not
- so you have to make that call.

I've been in similar situations, and have always gotten out of them
scratch-free apart from once. Let's hope you get lucky with this one.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

George

Update:

As I expected, there was no response to the F3 key either. But this is
strange - holding down the power button doesn't force shutdown. Is
removing the A/C and battery the only way to power off?
